Ukraine: the drone war has shifted the line of effort

Field notebook. Pokrovsk, Kupiansk, Kherson: what the spread of FPV and fiber-optic drones changes.

On the threshold of summer 2026, Ukraine's line of contact is no longer measured in kilometers gained or lost but in kilometers of grey zone saturated by drones. On the Pokrovsk axis, the tactical depth in which an armored vehicle can operate by day has dropped below five kilometers. Russian logistics has adapted (motorcycles, quads, mules) ; Ukrainian logistics too.

The novelty of spring 2026 holds in three facts. First, fiber-optic FPV drones (10 to 20 km of cable) bypass electronic warfare and bring precision strike down to a per-target cost comparable to a rifle grenade. Second, drone sortie density per kilometer of front now reaches several hundred per day in saturated sectors, a volume unprecedented in military history. Third, air-to-air interceptor drones, until recently exotic, have become an industrial trade on both sides.

On strategic depth, Ukrainian long-range strikes (Shahed-look-alikes, modified Neptune missiles) have turned Russian refineries into a recurring rather than exceptional target. Parity does not exist, but economic harassment capability is now a durable instrument.

Institute reading. This is no longer attrition warfare in the 1916 sense ; it is attrition of sensors. Whoever loses observation loses the line. For NATO, the question is no longer about transferring tanks (the 2023 debate) but about industrial-scale production of cheap loitering munitions and fiber supply chains. European armies that have not yet reorganized procurement around this object will pay for it on the next theater, not this one.
